Dental Trauma and Endodontics: How We Save Injured Teeth
Dental trauma — from sports injuries, falls, car accidents, or biting on unexpected hard objects — can affect teeth in ways that are not always immediately apparent. What looks like a minor chip may conceal significant damage to the nerves and blood vessels inside. What seems like a simple loosened tooth may have sustained a root fracture that will ultimately determine whether it can be saved.
At Anodyne Endodontics in Bloomingdale, IL, Dr. Zainab Aziz evaluates and treats all types of traumatic dental injuries, using advanced imaging and clinical endodontic principles to give every injured tooth the best possible chance of long-term survival.
Common Types of Dental Trauma
Crown fractures range from minor enamel chips to fractures involving the dentin or pulp. When the pulp is exposed, prompt treatment is critical.
Luxation injuries involve displacement of the tooth within its socket — it may be pushed sideways, partially out, or driven deeper into the jawbone. These injuries often require endodontic treatment weeks to months later, as the trauma disrupts the blood supply to the nerve.
Avulsion — when a tooth is completely knocked out of the socket — is a dental emergency. The tooth should be reimplanted or stored in milk or saline and the patient brought to an endodontist within 30 to 60 minutes for the best prognosis.
Root fractures are often invisible on standard X-rays and may require 3D CBCT imaging for accurate diagnosis.
Why Time Matters
For avulsed (knocked-out) teeth, every minute outside the socket reduces the likelihood of successful reimplantation. For traumatized teeth that remain in place, early evaluation identifies injuries requiring immediate treatment before irreversible pulp necrosis occurs.
Long-Term Monitoring Is Essential
Traumatized teeth that appeared uninjured at the time of the accident can develop pulp necrosis weeks, months, or even years later. Patients with a history of dental trauma should maintain regular follow-up visits to monitor the affected teeth radiographically.
