Knocked-Out or Broken Tooth? Dental Trauma First Aid That Saves Teeth

Written by ishaquem
Dental surgery treatment for dental trauma and tooth injury

When a tooth is knocked out or badly broken — during sports, a fall, or an accident — what you do in the first 30 to 60 minutes can determine whether the tooth can be saved. Acting quickly and correctly makes a real difference, and an endodontist is the specialist best equipped to treat traumatic dental injuries.

What to Do If a Tooth Is Knocked Out

For a permanent tooth that has been completely knocked out, time is critical. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the chewing surface), never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with milk or saline for a few seconds — do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue. If you can, reposition it back into the socket and bite gently on a clean cloth to hold it. If reinserting it is not possible, store it in milk (or a tooth-preservation solution) and see an emergency dentist or endodontist immediately. Do not store it in plain water.

What to Do for a Broken or Chipped Tooth

For a fractured tooth, rinse your mouth with warm water and save any broken pieces in milk if possible. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling and use a gauze if there is bleeding. Even if a chip seems minor, have it evaluated — cracks can extend toward the nerve and lead to infection if untreated. Our guide to cracked tooth syndrome explains the warning signs.

Why See an Endodontist After Dental Trauma?

Endodontists specialize in the inner tissues of the tooth, which are most affected by trauma. They can assess nerve damage and, when needed, perform procedures to save an injured tooth — including for knocked-out teeth that have been reimplanted. Learn more about how we treat injured teeth.

Prevention Matters Too

If you or your children play contact sports, a properly fitted mouthguard is one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent dental injuries in the first place.

Dental Trauma FAQs

How long do I have to save a knocked-out tooth?

The best chance of saving a knocked-out permanent tooth is within about 30 to 60 minutes. Keeping it moist in milk and getting to a dentist or endodontist immediately improves the odds.

Should I put a knocked-out tooth back in the socket?

If it is a permanent tooth and you can do so cleanly, gently reinserting it into the socket is ideal. If not, store it in milk and seek care right away. Do not attempt to reinsert a baby tooth.

Can a broken tooth get infected?

Yes. A crack or fracture can allow bacteria to reach the inner pulp, leading to infection over time. Prompt evaluation helps prevent this and may save the tooth.
